CHAPTER 32
SADIE
It had been a long day, which had ended with Beth sharing my bed with me, after sheâd given Bodhi the bedroom sheâd been in. It had been years since Iâd slept beside someone, and I couldnât settle, partly for this reason, but mainly because Beth was ridiculously restless when she was unconscious. So, after sheâd elbowed me and swiped my pillow from under my head, I gave up trying to get some rest and got up in search of coffee.
âCouldnât sleep?â My legs buckled when Deakonâs voice came from the darkness of the great room.
I clutched the cup I had in my hand to my chest. âFuck,â I muttered. âYou gave me a fright. What are you doing sitting there in the dark? Why arenât you in bed?â
âDonât relish the thought of sleeping with Jude and Esther,â he informed me.
âAh. I didnât realize you gave them your bedroom, that was kind of you. So, what are you doing?â I asked, wandering toward his silhouette. âYou have this massive house and youâre sleeping on a couch?â
âNot sleeping. Thinking,â he corrected.
âDamn thatâs what that annoying noise is? I wondered why I couldnât nod off.â
He chuckled. âYou never give up, huh?â
âNope.â I heard a note of melancholy in his tone. âWhat were you thinking about?â I probed.
âLife. My life. Family, the band, Lina moving to Colorado ⦠you,â he confessed.
âMe?â I mumbled and sat on the edge of the couch beside him.
âYeah. You. Whatâs going to happen next. How we can help you. Do you want us to get involved with the Jesse situation? Will you leave? How would I feel about that if you did? There are many things going on in my alcohol-sodden brain.â
âYou donât need to worry about me. I can take care of myself,â I said quickly. It was a default sentence Iâd used many times with Levi, but in truth I was petrified to strike out on my own. Plus, my heart felt heavy each time I tried to contemplate not being around Levi and lately, more at not being around Deakon.
âHow? By living in constant denial and hiding out at Leviâs house? Itâs one thing being there by choice, and quite another to believe thatâs your only option.â
âIt is my only option,â I blurted. âEven if my problem with Jesse miraculously disappeared, Iâm not qualified to do anything except housekeeping ⦠and I need a place to live. Just because I told you what happened doesnât make my problem yours. Iâve managed fine up until now. Besides, I love Levi and taking care of his home for him. You donât need to think about me.â
Deakon sat up and swung his legs to the floor. âFuck, Sadie. Itâs become impossible for me not to think about you ⦠and also ⦠Levi knows.â
âKnows?â I repeated as panic gripped my chest. âAbout Jesse?â
Deakon snickered. âNo. He knows about us,â he said, wagging a finger between us. âNot everything, but heâs warned me off you.â
âWhat?â I shrieked, mortified
